Core Stuff - The Core beliefs of Christianity: What we believe, why, and how to live it.
Christian Values
Managing Pecking Order:
Why we hurt each other and what to do about it. (Why we don’t do the good we know we should.) Based on solid biology, psychology, and theology. The problem isn’t ignorance about what’s right to do, the problem is our failure to do it. Ask the right question; Relax [because of Easter]; Get back to the Good Ground-rules.
Don’t Kiss the Mirror:
Students can think they’re cool when they’re actually doing something they’ll regret. So what IS cool, what isn’t. And how can we start being a life-enhancer? [Christ's perspective can tell us the difference.]
Anger–defusing:
don’t just “manage” anger – defuse it! Remove yourself, Resolve the underlying emotion driving it, and then Restore the relationship. [Jesus does this in a big way, and restores our relationship with God.]
Living a Better World
(non-violent positive action): Neither aggression, nor passivity, are beneficial, but positive action options can address global & personal injustice. [Jesus’s positive action on our behalf, gives both an example, and a solid foundation for our action.]
Heroes:
Who our heroes are, and how we choose them, is important. We invite them to influence us. Be like someone really fantastic: 6 criteria of good heroes. [Jesus is the supreme example of a hero.]
Dream-setting
(Direction): Your goals are directed by your “dream” of what you want the world to be like. If you’re clear about the dream, then your goals will become apparent. Find your place in the world. [Includes the spiritual notion of “calling.”]
Choices
(Clarity): A clear, useable model of how to make good decisions. Including Info, Values, and Sub-conscious factors. [Ways of ‘listening’ to God as a legitimate part of the model.]
All that Glitters
(Hope):learn to see the good in people, and in the world, despite the presence of the bad. Very useful in the aftermath of disasters. [Recognizing God’s influence in the world, despite the presence of suffering.]
Christmas
(Self-Acceptance in Struggle): The Christ”Mess” story, promotes honesty & compassion for battlers, including ourselves. [God cares about the messy and small realities of life.]
Real Relationships
(peers and partners): To do relationships well, you have to learn to be real about yourself, and others. Do real work, and have a real motivation. [How God lovingly relates to us, can shape how we relate to others.]
Valuing People
(identity, value): Overview the types of philosophies which influence self-worth, and how we treat others. Why are people valuable? [Christian foundations for caring and serving others.]
Leadership
(ways of leading): Good leaders, bad leaders, and their values. Where you lead, and how you lead is critical to what is created. Handy tips for leading a group / organization. [Jesus as a leader.]
How we know
(ways of knowing): 8 different ways of knowing about spirituality, including intellectual, artistic, relational, and spiritual experiences. Students are encouraged to develop their spirituality as they add new powers through their developmental stages. [Use their new developmental powers on spiritual matters as well.]
